Government Appoints Nine Additional Judges as Permanent Members of Allahabad High Court

On August 21, 2024, the Government of India issued a significant notification through the Ministry of Law and Justice, confirming the appointment of nine additional judges of the Allahabad High Court as permanent judges. This decision, made under Article 217(1) of the Indian Constitution, is a key initiative to address judicial vacancies and enhance the efficiency of the judiciary. By making these appointments permanent, the government aims to strengthen the judicial infrastructure and improve the capacity of the Allahabad High Court, which has been dealing with a substantial backlog of cases.

The judges appointed to permanent positions are:

  • Justice Syed Qamar Hasan Rizvi

  • Justice Manish Kumar Nigam

  • Justice Anish Kumar Gupta

  • Justice Nand Prabha Shukla

  • Justice Kshitij Shailendra

  • Justice Vinod Diwakar

  • Justice Prashant Kumar

  • Justice Manjive Shukla

  • Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal

Their appointments will take effect as they assume their roles, marking a crucial step in enhancing the court’s ability to manage its caseload and expedite the resolution of pending cases.

The Allahabad High Court, one of the largest in India, has faced significant delays in case resolutions. The permanent appointment of these judges is expected to substantially improve the court’s capacity to handle its growing demands.

The decision to elevate these judges followed a rigorous vetting process. On May 28, 2024, the Supreme Court Collegium unanimously recommended their elevation, with support from the Chief Minister and Governor of Uttar Pradesh. In accordance with the Memorandum of Procedure, the Supreme Court consulted judges familiar with the Allahabad High Court’s affairs and a Committee of two Supreme Court judges reviewed the judges' performance to ensure their suitability.

The notification, signed by Jagann Srinivasan, Joint Secretary to the Government of India, was circulated to key officials, including the Governor and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and the Chief Justice and Registrar General of the Allahabad High Court. This step underscores the government's commitment to improving judicial efficiency and addressing challenges faced by high courts nationwide.
